This very well known surrealist piece of art known as 'The Persistence of Memory' shows the soft melting pocket watch, which is said to depict the unconscious symbol of the relativity of time and space. This painting implies an understanding of Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity, but when asked whether this was in fact the case, Dali replied that the soft watches were merely his surrealistic interpretation of a Camembert cheese melting in the sun.
The strange white object in the middle of the piece, or the strange 'monster' is said to represent himself, something of a self-portrait, and the fact that a closed eye and several eyelashes are visible, it is thought that this suggests that the 'creature' is also in a dream state.
The orange clock at the bottom left of the painting is covered with ants, which is said to be a symbol of decay.
Our reproduction of this piece is a source of constant inspiration and interest, not only for you, but anyone who sees it.
